Winter 2015/16

back to chapter list...

While Faye would probably have described herself as largely happy and relatively confident, there were days when reservoirs of doubt seemed to dampen her mind, or even threaten to overflow and drown her. No matter how much she was loved at home and respected at work she could still sometimes feel small and shaky and desperate for affirmation. The odd thing was that the more vulnerable she felt on the inside, the more she tended to present a triumphant image to the world. And the strange thing was that the trick very often seemed to work —even on herself. Catching her reflection in an office window, she was heartily cheered by the image of a colourful, determined woman. If she looked that much like one, then part of her must actually be one. And if a part of her was really like that, then the more difficult bits seemed less worrying.
